iPhone 4S: S is for Siri

So has the day come. The day many of you, at least those of you who’s found my name by looking at Linux sites and alike, would never think would come in my case. Yes, today is the day I became an owner of an iPhone. The 4S version.

Now, many of you then ask “Why?”. A lot of people have asked me just this already. Why would I, a happy Android user who keeps posting about Linux – Ubuntu, Linux Mint and JoliOS in particular – choose to go with an iPhone now?

My last phone was a Samsung Galaxy 551. I got it because I wanted Android and I wanted keyboard, but not the little ones that came with Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro or whatever their names are. To begin with, I was quite happy, but eventually, I had questions and problems and it turned out one thing: It wasn’t easy to get the help I needed. It also eventually turned out, that it doesn’t matter how much external memory you can add to one of these phones, it WILL EAT UP your internal memory no matter what and then make you beg of it to be able to install a single new app on it.

Android may very well have been based upon the idea and concept of Linux to begin with, but it has moved away from it. Far away from it. It is not free and is not open source. It has just become another mobile OS with some slight features that are closer related to Linux than OSX. After all, UNIX is where all of these really originate from.

Now, I know what people may comment to something I said earlier in this post. I could just try to root my Android phone and then I can do all sorts of things with it. And I did. And that was really the beginning to a very rapid process to hard bricking my phone. I tried installing a new ROM on it and did a backup and bang, it turned black. And, as I said earlier, it was problematic to find help in a situation with my phone, so I had to latch on to some very tight straws. It didn’t help (yet), and so I had to make peace with the fact of that I had to get myself a new phone.

A week later or so, I ordered myself an iPhone 4S. I had been investigating quite a lot, trying to find the perfect phone, but in the end, I had to realize that there was actually not ONE perfect phone for me. There were several. A BlackBerry with Norwegian keys would be perfect for me. An Android with loads of internal memory and a built-in keyboard would be perfect for me. I even wondered if I should get myself a Windows Phone. But I ended up with iPhone. Why? It doesn’t have a keyboard, it isn’t Android, it’s Apple, which I have seemed to be quite a lot against. So why?

The fact is, I’ve been distorting my own view. You see, my original view is to have an open mind about all platforms. Try to be open to what is the best, and I have failed. This, I believe, has come from me seeing Apple as the most money-draining capitalistic company which delivers OS systems that are just better looking than what you get for free for more money than a complete Windows 7 computer (which you can run both Linux and Windows on). That, and the fact of that I’m a huge Beatles-fan, so Beatles being against Apple MAY have had SOME effect on me as well.

But now I have to realize it. Siri is fun. iPhone is quite fun, and it’s the biggest community out there. Because it’s the only phone that is being sold in billions of copies in the same version. Sure, there are variations such as iPhone 3G and iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, but they are all just based on top of the previous model. This makes it easy to find thousands of others who has experienced the same problems which you may have seen. It also makes it easy to find out what to stay away from and what to try. And of course, you get loads of fun accessories.

Now, there is one open thread here (which I can think of) that I have yet not answered. And I will answer it now. What about the keyboard? I am still not willing to 100% compromise with having to deal with touch only. Therefore I have ordered this off of eBay: A wireless keyboard for the iPhone 4/4S which is available in black and white and which connects through Bluetooth.

iPhone Siri IS fun!

I’m A Geek (Linux Mint)

Linux Mint

Image via Wikipedia

Let’s just admit it right now. I’m a geek. I love geeky stuff. I like watching Star Wars movies, play with Linux, learn new things and just dig really deep in music history. Still, I’m not fully and completely a geek. I am other things as well, but let’s be honest: I’m a geek. Nerd. Whatever.

The reason I’m saying so now, is my choice of OS (operative system). I have a mini computer I’ve used the past month in my job. The last half of that month, I chose to use a little OS called Joli OS (formerly Jolicloud and the service it provides is still called Jolicloud). I had it running along Windows 7.

The little computer I have is a Packard Bell dot s. It was a demo computer, meaning it was cheaper for me than if I had gotten a “normal” one. I don’t know if you know how little this computer is, so I’ll tell you. It’s a 10,1″ screen and weights about 1 kilogram (briefly over that, I believe). The webcam included (by what I’ve tested it for taking pictures with) is working better than my Acer 17″ that is much MUCH more powerful in every way than the Packard Bell really is except for this little feature.

Now, I’m done with that job. It was a short job, and I knew it would only last one month. I was happy with using Joli OS, and was going to convert my mini computer into a “Jolibook”, but then I realized that our network connection at home is messing it up. Our network is a N-net with WPA2 security. This isn’t working well with things based on Ubuntu 10.04 (at least). This led me to keep away from this transformation, as it would be a real hassle a lot of the time.

But now I have turned my computer into a full Linux computer. Linux Mint. You never saw that coming, did you? I was even sniffing around on Fedora 16 (which I believe I was thinking of mostly because of its dedication to the late Dennis Ritchie, a man all of us really should be grateful for having lived) at a time, but I found their window management to be…falsely working for my needs. So I made a live USB with Linux Mint 11, and had it erase my old partitions and let it get my computer all to itself. And I must say: choice well made.

It’s based on Ubuntu, which means it’s got quite a lot of features which are already familiar to me. It’s easy to configure the way you want it to go. And it always lets you know whether your system is up to date or not (with something you as a former Windows user would associate with anti-virus programs…but you won’t need one when you’re a Linux user).

The only thing that annoys me with this is really the security. As a Linux user, I am used to my distros asking me a lot about me authorizing this and that, but what’s new here, is that when I get into this computer, I will need to unlock my WiFi! That’s annoying. That’s a waste of time. But still acceptable, as you’re still getting quicker into your system (with this included), than you do with Windows.

I’m not going to say this computer will stay being a Linux Mint, because I do like the idea of being allowed to change this one’s distro quite a lot, but we’ll see. Anything goes, right? But so far, I am satisfied. Loving the easy configurations, the working spaces, the design, the speed and…well…everything I’ve really tried with it so far!

If this sounds interesting to you too, but you don’t want to give up your Windows or Mac OS, then you CAN dual-boot with this! You may do this in several ways: You may simply go to their website, download the version that says something about “Windows Installer”, and here is your options coming up. Either, you can do as I do, and have a free 4 GB USB that you make into a “Live USB” (using UNetBootin) or you may use a tool for emulation, such as Daemon Tools Lite! Then you simply install it alongside your current operative system! Simple! There are probably TONS of more specific tutorials on how to do this (which I suggest you look into if this is interesting you).

Oh, and if you do not have the internet configurations I do, then you really should try Joli OS as well. Probably my favorite OS, and it’s probably the lightest I’ve ever tried!

I’ve Got Some News For You

Title: Robyn – Fembots (or something like that…thought that song would fit for Android news)

Well, now I finally have my Android phone, and it’s pretty much like I expected, which is REALLY great!
Some things don’t have the official clients I was hoping for, but there are some decent options as replacements for them.

This post is in fact mostly made to find out what it’s like to post to WordPress and whether I can save drafts or not.

The phone I’ve got is a Samsung Galaxy 551, and so far am I super happy with it! It’s really great and suits me very well! I was wishing for an HTC Desire Z, but it was a bit too expensive, so I guess you can call this “the cheaper option” of it.

And if you’re wondering: yes, I could save a post as a draft!

December 1

A Danish Christmas tree illuminated with burni...

Image via Wikipedia

Well, today, it’s the first of December, which almost is a good enough cause for me to change my habit of having songs in my title!

It’s only 23 days left till Christmas eve now (and that’s what’s important where I come from)! So start buying them presents now, because time is running OUT!

What kind of advent calendar do you have, if any? I got two, nay, three ones right now! I got one with gifts from my girlfriend (which was TOTALLY unexpected, but it made me OH SO HAPPY! :D) and then yesterday I got one with Kinder chocolate from my mom, and today, as the first gift of the calendar from my girlfriend, was another calendar! Which is with short clips of her talking every day till Christmas eve! I’m VERY happy for my calendars! 😀

Christmas usually means some changes in my blogs, and this year shall be no exception! I will remove my wallpaper of the moment (which is…let me check…a picture I took of a sign of Joe Strummer‘s subway or something. Really cool picture and thing of existence!) and replace it with something more Christmassy.

I’ve started making electronic Christmas cards, and I think this might be a good tradition to start, but the idea is far from all mine. Far from being mine at all, really. BUT ANYWAYS, it’s something we could all do, because EVERYONE CAN get a hold of a picture manipulation program. If you don’t have Photoshop or anything other fancy, and want something that’s free, try GIMP then! That’s what I’m using when I’m on Linux (which I almost always am)!

HAPPY DECEMBER, EVERYONE!

Get ‘Em On, Move ‘Em Up, Rawhide

Title: Blues Brothers – Theme From Rawhide

Well, I’ve been working a lot on WordPress today, so I thought I should post a bit as well. If you can’t see what’s new here, it’s the fact of that I’ve updated the page Ubuntu A LOT! I’ll also try to make my updates into different pages that have “Ubuntu” as it’s parenting page. That looks good AND works better and easier. This way, you can fast find your way to whatever article it was you were looking for!

I started with WordPress now because I had nothing to do and I was a bit bored and love sick (in the way of missing my darling so EXTREMELY much I didn’t know what to do!) so I decided I should do something useful of me. This might not be what everyone thinks of as useful, but it’s smart to write down a few tricks and tips you might know of, especially since I’m going to try out something later today or soon at least that might make me have to reinstall my entire operating system. The problem with not being able to run DVD’s or CD’s is just something I can’t tolerate, because those are some of my favorite uses of the computer.

I might write some more later on, but now I gotta catch me some lunch. I’ll try to make it better on the front page and the design itself as well, and hope it’ll be something that you’ll all enjoy!

(And the title came from me having that song stuck to my brain now. It’s cool though!)

Most Special Tweets Of The Week, Part 2

This week I’ve collected the very best tweets I’ve come across through the week on Twitter. The list is pretty darn long, but I’m going to keep on with this project, so keep viewing.

And to illustrate quickly how one tweet is listed and what’s what, let’s take the first tweet on the list as an example:

*EthanSuplee
Dearest Monday, while I enter into you with my head held high, I want you to know that in my mind, you’re wearing Sunday’s face.
The “*” means it’s a new tweet. Where it say “EthanSuplee”, that’s the username on Twitter of the one who posted the tweet. “Dearest Monday, while I enter into you with my head held high, I want you to know that in my mind, you’re wearing Sunday’s face.” is the tweet itself.

So with that in mind, here they are, this week’s “Most Special Tweets Of The Week”:

Monday:
